Turkey Frying Safety Tips

Thanksgiving is a time for family, friends, and food. And for many people, that food includes a deep-fried turkey. While deep-fried turkey is delicious, it can also be dangerous if not done properly.

In 2017, there were an estimated 1,800 home cooking fires involving deep fryers, resulting in $20 million in property damage. To help keep you and your loved ones safe this Thanksgiving, here are some safety tips for deep-frying a turkey:

Before You Start

  • Choose the right turkey. Do not fry a frozen turkey. The ice can cause the oil to splatter and overflow.
  • Use the right equipment. Use a turkey fryer specifically designed for outdoor use and make sure it is in good working condition.
  • Choose a safe location. Place the fryer at least 10 feet away from any structures, including your home, garage, and deck.
  • Have a fire extinguisher on hand. Keep a fire extinguisher of type ABC or BC nearby in case of an emergency.

During Frying

  • Never leave the fryer unattended. Monitor the oil temperature closely and adjust the heat as needed.
  • Wear protective clothing. Wear long sleeves, gloves, and safety glasses to protect yourself from burns.
  • Keep children and pets away from the fryer. Children should be supervised by an adult at all times.
  • Do not overload the fryer. The oil should not be more than two-thirds full.
  • Be careful when lowering the turkey into the oil. The oil may splatter when the turkey is added.
  • Cook the turkey to the proper temperature. The internal temperature of the turkey should reach at least 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

After Frying

  • Turn off the fryer and let the oil cool completely. Do not attempt to move the fryer while the oil is still hot.
  • Dispose of the oil properly. Do not pour the oil down the drain. Allow the oil to cool completely and then pour it into a disposable container.
  • Clean the fryer thoroughly. Once the fryer has cooled completely, disassemble it and clean it with soap and water.

Additional Safety Tips

  • Use a turkey thermometer to check the internal temperature of the turkey. Do not rely on the color of the meat to determine if it is done.
  • Have a first-aid kit on hand. In case of a burn, immediately apply cold water to the area for at least 15 minutes.

By following these safety tips, you can help ensure that your Thanksgiving turkey-frying experience is a safe and enjoyable one.
